About
Two dear family members are the inspiration for “Where’s the Salt?”
1. My youngest brother had high blood pressure as a child, so my mum always made a special effort to use as little salt as possible in her cooking. As a result, I think our palates are pretty attuned to different tastes, they’ve never been pickled with salt.
2. Nowadays, my father-in-law is a regular and very entertaining visitor at our table. His first question, before he even tastes the food, is often “Where’s the salt?” It’s become a joke with us now, but if I ever manage to get him to eat a meal without adding salt, it gives me a little thrill ![]()
So, while this blog is mainly my ramblings on food for families in general, and Cork (in Ireland) food in particular, the title is inspired by my dear brother Mark and my charming father-in-law Pierce.
Where’s the Salt is dedicated to:
- My Mum, even though she disputes it, she’s the one who got me started in the kitchen.
- My Dad, he loves to see mum and I cooking together, loves the idea of passing tradition and knowledge down through the generations, from mother to daughter. That’s probably why I pop my little toddler up on the counter whenever I prepare food, so she can see whats going on too.
- My dear Husband, my berth in the port, who suffers the disasters in our kitchen gallantly and praises each little success heartily.
- My wonderful little girl, who will taste pretty much anything once.
If that’s all a bit gushy, well, I’m a little bit sorry, but it’s not all that often you get to tell those you love how much they mean to you, so I’m not really all that sorry
